Ben was raised in Sharpsburg GA, on land that generations of ancestors have stewarded. His most precious childhood memories include the endless adventures with family, building forts, paddling rivers, backpacking, and exploring the natural world.
From the early 2000’s to present he has experienced many different career paths accumulating extensive knowledge in Transformational Life Coaching & Mentoring, Vision Quest/Rites of Passage, Ecological Restoration, Environmental Education(K-12), and Permaculture Design. All of these experiences have led him to creating and founding NatureLink,LLC in 2018.
Ben’s life vision is to help restore people’s mind, body, and spirit to the natural world, so that we become fully present in repairing our culture, communities, and Planet.
In 1990, James moved into a riparian forest ecosystem in south Mississippi to build a house and live ensconced in nature. In the ensuing dialogue between human and place, James asked nature to teach him how to become a “human being,” how to embark on a “path with heart,” to bring forth one’s authentic self by manifesting his true vocation–a right livelihood–that employs his unique set of “gifts” and brings them into the world.
James has been facilitating Vision Quest experiences since 1989 to help others along similar roads, using exercises/techniques bootstrapped through nearly 30 years of deliberate and sustained nature experience. The culmination of this research is an inquiry into niche, a human niche, that extends the concept of vocation to determining and bringing forth one’s function in an ecosystem, one’s unique functional “role” within an ecosystem in service to its ecosystemic wholeness–even in a city.
Outside of NatureLink, James is the founder of La Terre Bioregional Center, a locus for investigations into bioregional and integral issues along the “coastal plains bioregion.” He is also is an environmental education consultant, design/builds outdoor math and science laboratories in Mississippi and creates appropriate curricula to utilize them in order to teach kids about nature while importantly following state curricula.
We are beyond grateful to have someone of such great stature and knowledge to be part of NatureLink. If you find yourself in any of the Youth to Adult Vision Quest/Rites of Passage Programs that James is involved with, then you are in for a journey of self discovery that you will never forget.
